Who are the radicals now? Where are the emerging threats? How does the issue of identity operate? How do the dynamics of radicalisation differ within communities? What are the implications for those who are working with people who may be vulnerable to extremist influences?

The theme of the event is the dynamic between extremist influences and the sense of identity. How do extremist movements and networks motivate followers and sustain their loyalty? What are the key influences and what diversionary approaches are effective? How are these influences developing and what are the implications for mitigating vulnerability in a globally connected world?
Speakers include:
Dr Paul Jackson, Lecturer in Modern History, University of Northampton, you can read his blog here. Dr Jackson will explore the recent development of extreme right wing activity in the UK and Europe. How are extreme right wing networks interacting, and what are the implications for those working with people who may be vulnerable?
Professor Steven Greer, Professor of Human Rights, University of Bristol, Professor Greer will explore the impact of the UK's anti-terrorism laws on Muslims post-9/11.
Latif Ismail, Bristol Somali Forum, will explore the distinctive nature of vulnerability and radicalisation as it has affected Somalis in the UK.
Hanif Qadir, Founder of the Active Change Foundation, a charity set up to tackle recruitment into violent extremism, will explore current developments in Al Qaida influence in the UK and elsewhere.
Steve Vaughan, Special Branch Community Engagement Officer, Avon and Somerset Police. Steve will share some local learning and perspective, looking in particular at the community impact following a local terrorist arrest in 2008.
The day will finish with a speaker panel Q&A session, which will reflect on the questions raised during the day.
